Aspectual Embedding
نویسنده
چکیده
In this paper a new approach to the determination of aspectual class on a sentential level is proposed. It turns out that the composition of a new aspectual class can be understood as an embedding of the class introduced by the verb into a new more complex situation. The VP to bake apple pies, for instance, can therefore be presented as an iteration of several baking an apple pie-events which, however, doesn't have to be necessarily sequential. Assuming this, the embedding process can be described in a monotonic way as embedding the verb's aspectual class as the basic type into a new eventuality which is triggered by a limited set of constructions (e.g. bare plurals or time adverbials). It should be stressed that the embedding takes place only when necessary and consequently an underspeciied representation is required which can be resolved when more speciic information is added. Hence a formalisation of the embedding process is described by the newly introduced underspeciied semantics formalism Minimal Recursion Semantics ?]. The aspectual interpretation can therefore be postponed until the end of the parse and the semantic content of the whole sentence is interpreted according to the aspectual rules in a second processing step.

The Aspectual Type BEGIN
This paper deals with the notion of aspect as it is understood in the eventuality structure based formal approaches to aspect. These approaches typically link aspect to the interpretation of the philosophical and ontological notion of event, seen as a conceptual entity with rigid edges: beginning, protraction and end, and analyse and study extensively the end part of events ((Vendler, 1967),(Mo...
متن کاملContrastive Analysis of Aspectual Oppositions in English and Persian
This article aims at contrasting aspectual oppositions in English and Persian in the context of the novel The Old Man and the Sea, and its translation by Daryabandari (1983) as the data. Unlike English, in Persian perfective and imperfective forms are morphologically marked. While the vast majority of English simple past forms are translated into Persian by past perfective forms, only less than...
متن کاملAspectual Verbs as Functional Heads: Evidence from Japanese Aspectual Verbs
A novel analysis of aspectual verbs is proposed according to which aspectual verbs are heads of functional projections rather than main verbs taking clausal complements. As a case study, four Japanese aspectual verbs are analyzed: those that express inception (hajime‘begin’), continuation (tsuzuke‘continue’), and termination (oe‘finish’, and owar‘end’). Employing data from previous studies, Jap...
متن کاملAspectual Classes and Scales of Change
In this paper I outline a theory of aspectual classes based on theories of scalar change (Hay et al. 1999, Kennedy and Levin 2008). Standard models of aspectual classes focus on event decompositional or featural distinctions between predicates. However, such classifications often overor undergenerate, and also do not necessarily capture the temporal properties upon which aspectual classificatio...
متن کاملTense, aspect and coercion in a cross-linguistic perspective
Aspectual operators like the progressive in English change the aspectual nature of the eventuality. The meaning shift is grammaticalized by means of a morphological marker or a syntactic construction. But sometimes aspectual shift is hidden. These are cases where an eventuality description is coerced in order to repair the mismatch between the aspectual nature of the eventuality and the aspectu...
